India ! A great country with ancient history, A country with the history of initial civilization, A country with a big number of religions, languages, A country with all types of geographical, climatic conditions that are present all over the world. And still a country of snake charmers, colorful dresses, folk dances to foreign tourists ?
India is so huge and it has population coming from strikingly contrast backgrounds that it is actually difficult to streamline the growth and the systematic functioning of the country.
India is supposed to have largest democracy in the world. But does it really exist? People do not exercise their votes as they do not believe in any present political personality. It apparently makes no difference to them that who is ruling? They have this firm belief that nothing is going to change their lives.
Ultimately who goes for voting? People who have absolutely no idea what are they doing? I would like to mention here a real incident; once during election, party workers were canvasing among villagers, “Is baar “kamal” wali congress ko vote dena, theek hai?” (This time you vote congress with the symbol of lotus) !! Apparently the candidate had changed the party!
Anyhow, the point is that we have voters , voting in lieu of a blankets and biscuits. We have poverty to that extent. Other people make their life comfortable banking on their education, qualification and settling down abroad.
I think we need a kind of revolution. On one hand we talk of going to moon and on the other hand we have a huge crowd asking for govt aid based on the caste? Indian govt. is already providing subsidy in so many things, still people have got so used to getting things without working hard and earn it with dignity that they probably put double amount of efforts to get the aid in any form.
In spite of brain drain on a large scale; we still have educated and concern people who can change the scenario, only they need a leading figure.
Well, including me, most of us just curse the system and the politician. What I feel that there is a huge educated lot who can do wonders for our country, they just need to gather and streamline their efforts.
Even The face of USA what we see today has not come easy way, there too have been generations who have worked hard and we probably shy away from that. We do not have the feeling of belongingness for our country? So if things are going wrong we just accept it like our destiny and increase our tolerance power for delayed trains, bad traffic, garbage on the roads, delayed govt jobs.
Or other option we choose is to migrate and settle abroad.
At govt level too, there are good people who try to bring good changes in the system but they are curbed down and do not get enough support. If one goes for quality work, what will happen to those people who receive money every year through contractors by passing their tenders of cheap quality work.(Which results in getting the work done every year.)
Sometimes I feel even bribe should be made official at govt level as long as quality work is being done. Is bribe the result of being underpaid? So let it be like pvt sector, Give us the results and you would be paid handsomely.
A very good example of quality work is Delhi Metro; where Mr Sreedharan supposedly asked the govt for no interference and chose his own team to work. That shows good work can be done in India at govt level too only if govt recognise good and talented people and give them open hand to work.
Now as citizens what we can do? A lot beginning from a small scale as at home a housewife constantly works to keep the house clean and constantly keeps telling her children to keep the things at right place and other good habits everyday as she is sure that one day they would do it. AND THEY DO LEARN AT LAST ! We too can continue follow the rules and be particular about ethics.
This is the country where people feel proud jumping the red light. They feel proud getting their work done through wrong means. They boast their smartness if they are able to bribe a govt official in order to get their work done. A honest person finds himself lagging behind like a fool. So what he does? He too prefers to either remain quiet and aloof from all wrong things happening around him or seek for the green card. In latter case, he is probably more happy making once in a while trip to India and in prior case he in between curses politicians and moves on.
Now when I behave as a responsible and good citizen, I find myself with very few people. Well, for instance I used to drive to my office at Pune and around 9'o clock, during rush hrs. if I would stop at the red signal while there would be just a couple of vehicles passing from the other side, people would start jumping the red light, moreover the cars behind me would start honking as if I was a fool waiting for the green signal. Now this is common in most of the cities.
Now I should continue doing what I find is right as a duty of a good citizen and hope that the number would multiply everyday. I know there are many people who carry empty packets of chips or used bottles and look around for bins, at public places or site seeing places where as garbage is lying around on the roads at those very places.
I found a very good and practical example in one of the very plush malls of Pune. People tend to spit on the corner walls of the staircase, even in posh centrally air conditioned malls and multiplexes. So as soon as this mall was inaugurated, there were plenty of posters of God and Goddess pasted on the walls through out the stair case and to date that mall is sparkling clean.
The only option to make people respect law and abide by rules is to fine them heavily and strict punishments. Expecting ethical sense and the sense of the responsibility in the people is of no use. And we should cooperate the govt; if there is one good step.
And ultimately one has to love his/her country just as you love your home and take care for its smooth management and functioning.
